Sometimes commonly known as VW, German automaker Volkswagen have been at the forefront of automobile manufacture since its founding in 1937. Today, the company is the second largest automaker in the world (the biggest in its native Germany), has a production output of over 5.7 million units a year, and boasts 3 cars in the list of top 10 best-selling automobiles in history. Those being the Beetle, the Golf and the Passat.
In German, the name Volkswagen means “people's car” and the company's current slogan shows just how much the company believes in its products, as it is “Das Auto” which simply means “The Car”.
Volkswagen is proud to have been the winner of World Car of the Year on 4 separate occasions, in 2009 (Golf), 2010 (Polo), 2012 (up!) and 2013 (Golf), and has been voted European Car of the Year 15 times.
One of Volkswagens most famous and most popular cars, the classic Beetle, was first produced from 1938 up until 2003, and during this time over 21.5 million were produced!
